Claudio Arrau was one of the most distinguished pianists of the 20th century, born in Chillán, Chile, in 1903. He demonstrated exceptional musical talent from a young age, giving his first public performance at the age of five. Supported by a scholarship from the Chilean government, he moved to Germany to study at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin under Martin Krause, a student of Liszt.
Arrau was renowned for his profound interpretations and impeccable technique. His extensive repertoire spanned from Baroque composers like Bach to Romantic composers such as Chopin, Liszt, and Beethoven, as well as works by modern composers. He was particularly acclaimed for his interpretations of Beethoven, with his recordings of the complete Beethoven piano sonatas considered landmarks in the field.
Beyond his achievements as a performer, Arrau was also an influential music educator, teaching at various music institutions and universities worldwide. He mentored many accomplished pianists, imparting his deep musical insight and expressive approach to interpretation.
